The detail

The Sentinel DAC is MSB's unrestricted reference digital system: three purpose-built chassis separate digital processing, analogue conversion and power delivery so each stage can operate without compromising the others. Designed and manufactured in Silicon Valley, the system combines the company's discrete conversion architecture with extensive mechanical, electrical and software engineering.

THREE PURPOSE-BUILT CHASSIS

The Sentinel Digital Director performs the system's digital processing and user-interface functions. It prepares the signal for conversion, then sends independent left- and right-channel data through fully isolated fibre-optic Sentinel-Links to the Analog Converter.

DUAL-MONO ANALOG CONVERTER

Inside the Analog Converter, the left and right channels are treated as separate mono DAC assemblies. Together they use 32 Hybrid DAC MKII modules, a dedicated Sentinel Clock and an analogue preamplifier. Moving intensive digital processing into the Director allows the conversion chassis to concentrate on precise digital-to-analogue conversion and low-noise analogue output.

32 HYBRID DAC MKII MODULES

MSB quadrupled the module count of its previous eight-module reference architecture. Thousands of aerospace-grade precision resistors operate across the 32 modules, providing many parallel conversion channels and enabling MSB's most advanced implementation of Bit Diffusion Technology.

CUSTOM SENTINEL CLOCK

The oven-controlled clock is a fully discrete MSB design developed with the crystal-wafer manufacturer. Because crystal oscillation is mechanically sensitive, the clock is mounted on a tuned, isolated energy-dispersion platform to protect timing performance from vibration.

THREE INDEPENDENT POWER SUPPLIES

The Power Supply contains three separate supply sections. Two independently feed the left and right mono DACs, while a third ultra-low-noise supply is reserved for the Sentinel Clock. Power reaches the converter through three dedicated Summit power cables.

PRECISION MACHINING AND FINISH

The chassis uses billet-machined components, complex internal three-dimensional layouts and fine stainless-steel detailing. MSB's five-axis machining keeps the exterior restrained while supporting the dense mechanical construction and controlled internal relationships required by the electronics.

INSTALLATION AND VENTILATION

The three chassis are not intended to be stacked. Each unit requires its own shelf or support surface, at least 3 inches of clearance above and 2 inches at each side, and an open-air or actively ventilated enclosure. The system should be kept away from direct sunlight; a temperature-controlled room is recommended in hotter climates.
